THE FIFTIES # 225: CARMEN ROSALES, ALICIA VERGEL, CESAR RAMIREZ AND OSCAR MORENO IN PABLO S. GOMEZ' "MN": KOMIKS SERIAL AND MOVIE ADAPTATION (1953/54)/ Re-posted

MN--- “Ano ang tunay na kahulugan ng dalawang titik na ito? Anong uri ng kasaysayan ang napapaloob dito? Pag-ibig? Poot? Kapalaluan? Kakumbabaan?” These are some of the intriguing questions asked and readers are curious.

MN was serialized in Pilipino Komiks in 1953 to 54 and ran for 26 installments (September 26, 1953 to September 11, 1954). It was created by Pablo S. Gomez and Carlos Gonda (fyi, Carlos Gonda is the pen name of Pablo S. Gomez) and drawn by Fred Carillo.

Pablo S. Gomez’ “MN” stands for Marissa Navarro, a character played onscreen by screen legend Carmen Rosales. It tells of a story of Marissa, a strict, heartless, domineering and fiery heiress and daughter of a wealthy landowner, who instills and sows fear among its populace. She gets the ire of one of the tenants, Ada (played by Alicia Vergel). However, she meets her match in Armando (Cesar Ramirez), another lowly tenant, and eventually falls in love with him. Marissa’s strange character was a result of her sad experiences with another man, Oscar (played by Oscar Moreno).

Simon, Gerry,Auggie,
I don't know why Carrillo was so underrated. Everything he did in Philippine Komiks was up to par with the best of them. In American Comics, I think he was the only one who truly, really melded with the American style. I speak highly of him in my blog: http://rsamonte1.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2007-05-08T09%3A33%3A00-07%3A00&max-results=7
Simon,
BTW, now that you mentioned Oscar Moreno. He was in a movie titled Ang Asawa Kong American way back in the early 50s, maybe late 40s. Anyway would you believe I met the American lady, Joan Page, who played opposite him right here where in live, in Burbank. She went on to star, I think in other films, but notably on TV in Edong Mapangarap. Read on in my Multiply site here: http://rsamonte.multiply.com/photos/album/19/Rod_Joan_Page#

Simon,
Wow, ang haba ng video clip, HD pa. Cesar Ramirez and Alicia Vergel were my favorite action duo at the time. Before FPJ, Cesar Ramirez was the King of Action, and Alicia the Queen. They got married.

One of my favorite Filipino film directors is Mar S. Torres, an intuitive artist, just like Hollywood's Willie Wyler.

MN in my opinion, is PSG's most riveting story and is totally out of the confines of his regular fares of downtrodden proletarian characters struggling for social justice and thirsting for revenge.

This one has a spiralling build up leading to the most refreshing ending, basing on the standards of komiks stories of the 1950s.

If Floradema (Ang Bilanggong Birhen) suffered from awful loose ends and illogicality, MN is definitely its antithesis. What's more, despite its low tech facilities (compared to Hollywood's facilities that time), the film still shines and looks like a million dollar, and quite current in terms of story-telling, visual scope, and intellectual acuity.

And I also agree that Fred Carillo was one of our very best komiks illustrators.
