RARE PRE-WAR TAGALOG MOVIE FLYERS # 16: "KABAN NG TIPAN" (1939)

"Kaban ng Tipan" (1939)
X-Otic Films
Release Date: November 16, 1939/ Metropolitan Theater
Director Jose Nepomuceno
Story Dr. Fausto J. Galauran
Cast Lucita Goyena, Reynaldo Dante, Andres Centenera, Luningning, Amanding Montes, Precioso Palma, Juanito Lazaga

"Movie flyers have been used by theater owners as promotional ads to drum up business for movies. They would print them up from materials provided by the studio, adding information on local screening times and locations. Although they were cheaply produced, many of the flyers were quite nicely designed and are now considered highly collectibles. In many cases the original films have been lost, making the surviving flyers the only visual record of numerous movies."

Hi anonymous 1 & 2 or A & B:

Simon has the flyer and he collected them from way back when.

What I am interested more is this: The theaters where these films were exhibited sound all unheard of when I used to live in the Philippines. Maybe you guys can research where theaters such as: Grand, Metropolitan, Strand, Cine Ligaya and Cine Star used to be. Are the buildings still there but with another name?

JM, according to my mother (who is 86 years old now), yung Cine Star nasa Azcarraga (now Recto Avenue) papuntang Divisoria (siguro sa may area ng Reina Regente). The other theaters you mentioned, palagay ko mga provincial theaters yun like Cine Ligaya in Bocaue, Bulacan.

Thanks, James.

It is indeed unfortunate that the Second World War ravaged the Philippines and not only lives perished but buildings as well. Since your mom used to worked in the theater, I'm pretty sure she could remember a lot of old Tagalog films. Try asking her anything about Tagalog movies, then write them for us to read. She might have some interesting stories to tell, you know.
